My Favorite Childhood Cartoon Character [Assignment]

In discussion in class, I talked about how Timon and Pemba from The Lion King were my favorite cartoon characters, but at the end of class, I realized this wasn’t true. My favorite cartoon characters growing up were Donkey and Shrek from Shrek.

I love the Shrek movies. I didn’t realize I loved them that much until I came to college, but I’ve always loved the characters and the music from the movies. That being said, the friendship of Shrek and Donkey has always been the most humorous bit to the movies.

I guess I’ve always related to Donkey. I talk too much, I sing at random points, and I usually have someone telling me to shut up. Slightly dramatic? Always. And Shrek? A total grouch. Which is how I’m feeling right now as I approach week 3 of shelter-in-place.

Together, they are the perfect duo. And they maintain the banter through 4 movies. If I ever find myself owning a cat and a dog in the future, I will name the cat Shrek and the dog Donkey.

I wish I could rewatch them right now, I have them all on DVD. But guess where they are. That’s right: in my dorm at TCU while I am home in the midst of this pandemic.

Is Shrek on Netflix?

I totally forgot about Shrek and Donkey- what an iconic duo! I will say that Shrek may be the title character, but Donkey most definitely provides some of the funniest and best quotes from the movies! For example, Donkey says in the third film when Donkey and Puss in Boots find themselves suddenly swapping bodies as a result of Artie and Merlin’s magic, “How in the name of Hans Christian Andersen am I supposed to parade around in these goofy boots?” I also can’t help but sing along to “Accidentally in Love.” 🙂
